Friday : 11:11am Sheffield Station, Sheffield,
The geeks amassed at the station board the train bound for the land of VAGUE. Several of us are requiring hats for the Saturday's fancy dress festivities...and so upon arriving in Manchester we trek up to the hotel.

Some rooms are ready, others arn't the hotel seems nice enough. My room was ready and it seemed alright...nice view of the alleyway next to the hotel but bed shower etc all in there.

Wandering over to Afflec's Palace for Trilby hunting. And lo the trilbys were hunted down and captured.

Return to hotel around 2pm ish to finish checking in. Ah now the Hotel's cheapo rooms become apparent. They have what are known as City Rooms....these internal rooms have no windows...and thus with the lack of light fixtures are very dark...and apparently very sweaty...

4pm to the Weatherspoons for drinking and games of BIG TWO!.

5pm ish heading down for Registration and yet more drinks...

At some point we missed BBJs opening speech due to not being allowed out of the upstairs bar with drinks, seems no one told the bouncer it was ok.

Friday evening some time...wander/taxi drunkenly back to hotel

Saturday Morning: Up early. Hotel "Breakfast" place filled with geeks confused at the wobbling mass of goo that is supposed to be scrambled eggs.

Wander down to place for another opening speech and the meandering to games.

DnD:Modern for me

I'm really not a big fan of 4th Ed..and despite the weekend I have to say I'm still not so much of a fan.

Saturdays game started us in a cave (for some reason) and begun with what should have been a simple combat encounter (though it was pitched a little too high though rerolls make these things much easier) But with few people knowing the system well and others only having played a small amount this simple encounter ground very slowly to a crawl. I think this took 2 hours to get through and if it wasn't for one of the guys using the Magic Vaugue ball to fill the frenzied Werewolf's blood with silver I don't know how long it would have taken....Then there was a fight with some hobgoblins who had set up a barricade after we'd told a lord about something or other (we didn't actually get to "speak" to him) then a fight with some owlbears on a boat...and yeah that was about it...That took from 10 to 5pm.

No offense to the GM intended here btw it was a fun game but I think the system bogged us down in the combat sapping us for time.

Saturday Evening : Chinese at some underground AYCE place...quite tasty...too full though.
Go back to hotel get changed into Ganster/Mafia gear for the Fancy Dress

Spend time drinking and answering quiz questions for our Crystal Vague team.

Saturday Evening some Time: Taxi back to Hotel...pass out

Sunday Morning: More dodgy breakfast and check out then down to place for more games

This game was fun:

So we describe our characters and what they are like and are plonked on a plateau. All we know is what we have just said (and about clouds and lightning too)

From then we proceed to wander the plateau and its paths. When ever a char got left behind they were replaced getting a new char and a new hat. I didn't mention the hats?? So each char has an associated hat. Red or Blue...the Blue's are in charge, but have to agree on certain things. The reds have to do what the blue's say but can interact with the world in the way that blue's can't. So whenever you change char you change colour of the hat...but of course all of the chars accept this change as if it had always been. It got down to a very silly finale where there could be only 1 red and 1 blue remaining. (After the two blues had told the reds to stay within two squares of them and one blue bull rushing the other over the edge then being pulled over herself (leading to the reds charging over the edge to try to remain in 2 squares of the blues ))

After the final killing of the last reds game over and time for judging and piling into the bar for last drinks while scores were totted up

HUGS won on 54 Points
with Sheffield Wargamers on 53

had one of our RP teams been combined with the WGs we would have won the competition again...

And certainly if both RP and WG had been combined we would have ended up on 74 points.

As HUGS can't host the nationals (due to not enough hotels or accomodation in general)

Watt gamers (Edingburgh) stepped up to host 2010

Sunday Evening...trying to get the banners home on the train..

That second game sounds ridiculous and awesome. You should run that at some point so we can play it!

The second game was. Gregor had 42 characters prepared. More awesome was that one of the scenes was his character as they had left it in a session before the nationals. The outcome of the survivors over the weekend was to determine the fate of his character.

So...

You split the team THREE ways... And still came within a hair of winning?

Good grief. Always those Wargamers, isn't it?
