Magic

So here http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/27a and here http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/27 they've announced the changes for the upcoming core set

Summery of Changes

Smaller Set Size - Ok
50% new Cards - Brilliant
Prerelease and Launch events - Excellent
Renamed to Magic: The Gathering 2010 (M10 for short) - Oooh dodgy don't like personaly
No longer Biannual they will come out yearly - Bad so many extra cards that some people may feel obligated to buy.
Sets rotate out of Standard in October with the set that precedes them (apart from 10th which rotates out in July) - Thats a bit neither here nor there but it does mean that there will be 2 core sets which are in standard at once which is a bit weird....
15 Mythic Rares in M10 - Sigh enough with the Mythics now please
5 of the Mythics are the Lorwyn planeswalkers now Mythic Status - Well I clearly didn't see that coming with teh previous bullet /sarcasm

So I'm not, as you can probably tell, convinced by these changes.

Thoughts?

I don't like ultra rare cards; putting a set together with ultra rares is difficult unless you plan to buy singles too. Also, they tend to make them totally overpowered. The set size above, should be achievable from two boxes if you take out the ultra rare cards. With a good wind, you might get a set from three, I suspect you need four and if conflux is anything to go by even this is not guranteed.

That aside - I think my only concern is just how much it's all going to cost. Is this extra core set release in addition to the expansion releases, or instead of one of them?

I don't care if there are two core sets in standard - but it does render the term 'core set' somewhat redundant and is change from what the policy always seemed to be in the past.

I dunno, the price rise for the new set has really put me off WotC, but not off magic...

so as far as the articles claim the core set is going to replace a 4th expansion (coldsnap, eventide unhinged etc) type of thing so there will be 1 large release 2 smaller ones and 1 core set each year
