DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature.

oooohhh that could be shiny...

As long as they don't go the route of the horrible looking "Speed Racer" (I want to throw up every time I see the trailer), things should be good.

Hey, are you in the target audience for "Speed Racer"? As in, Are you old enough to drive a car legally? The "Speed Racer" movie is kidvid, nothing less.

The hell does that have to do with anything? It's being directed by the Wachowski Brothers, of all people! Not exactly the guys I'd pick to make a kids' movie!

Besides, I eagerly awaited and loved the live-action Transformers movie - proof that old Saturday morning cartoons CAN be properly made into a film. "Speed Racer" doesn't look like that, though.

The fact the Britney Spears just made a music video that rips off "Ghost in the Shell" also gives me pause.

O.0

That just seems disturbing for some reason.

Is Mamoru Oshii directing?

If not then it will probably suck. There is a reason that the movie is so good. That guy is pretty dern awesome.

Full disclosure: I couldn't bear more than 1 episode of the TV series (though I love its soundtrack). I also despise Masamune Shirow's artwork in general.

FTA Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and brought the project to the studio. Jamie Moss has been tapped to pen the adaptation.

no idea about directing though not in the article...though Speilberg apparently loves GitS so perhaps he'd do it himself

That could be interesting. I'd be intrigued as to what Spielberg's take on it would be.

I'm willing to keep an open mind about it. A movie redone in a different medium 15 years is fine by me.
